Engine / Powertrain / Drivetrain

Rugged axles

The rugged front and rear axles are equipped with torque proportioning differentials as standard equipment, for sure-footed performance on all types of ground conditions. This reduces wheel slippage, increases tire life and enhances pushing and digging performance. The four-wheel hydraulic, oil-bath disc brakes stand up to the demands of thousands of hours of stop-and-go operations. The parking brake is a multi-disc unit mounted inside the transmission. Because it is fully enclosed and protected, it provides outstanding durability and excellent braking action.

Powerful engines

Dependable, fuel-efficient power comes from reliable Cummins turbocharged diesel engines. These powerful engines deliver outstanding performance. The LW170, LW190 and LW230 all use the reliable, economical 6CT 8.3 engine, while the LW270 uses the M11 engine. The M11 features an advanced injection system that delivers improved air/fuel mixing, reduced fuel consumption and reduced exhaust emission. To get you going during extreme temperatures, the LW170, LW190 and LW230 come standard with a cold-weather starting aid.

Reliable transmissions

Reliable, oversized transmissions deliver silky-smooth gear shifting and direction changes. The transmissions on all four models come standard with four forward and four reverse speeds and the ability to switch between manual and automatic modes. Gear shifting and forward-reverse direction changes are controlled by a single lever mounted on the left side of the steering column, while a simple push button on the instrument panel switches between manual and automatic transmission modes. For increased productivity, additional transmission features include kick-down, hold and downshift functions.

Axles

Front Rigid Rear Oscillating Rear axle oscillation 26° Rear wheel vertical travel 17.5" (445 mm) Differentials Torque proportioning with automatic torque transfer Oil change interval 2,000 hours Final drives and wet disc brakes are hermetically sealed.

Brakes

Service brakes self adjusting Type wet disc on all four wheels Control Pedal located on left of steering column. Electrical transmission disengagement switch. Servo-assisted hydraulic brake circuit with independent circuit for each axle. Parking brake hand-operated oil-immersed, multiple disc Parking brake control hydraulic (lever in cab) Parking brake engages automatically when the engine stops. Brake circuits comply with the following international standards: ISO 3450, EEC 71/320, SAE J1473.

Hydraulic system

Intelligent hydraulics

The LW170, LW190, LW230 and LW270 use an advanced hydraulic system that delivers outstanding breakout force and some of the fastest hydraulic cycle times in the industry. The system features two gear pumps controlled by a sequencing valve. When digging and pushing, the sequencing valve cuts off flow to one of the pumps, allowing the unabsorbed power from that pump to be transferred to the transmission for increased traction. During loading operations, the second pump is activated, increasing bucket/implement operating speed for quicker loading cycles. The two-lever pilot-type boom and implement controls are conveniently mounted within easy reach of your right hand. Their ergonomic placement and low-effort operation assure minimal operator fatigue, even after the most demanding days.

Durability of Machines

You've got no time for downtime. That's why heavy-duty durability is designed and built into every aspect of these machines. Mounts for axles, engine, transmission, boom linkage and hydraulic cylinders receive critical attention during their design and manufacturing to virtually eliminate any possibility of failure. The result? A wheel loader that can take all you can dish out and come back for more.
