Caterpillar 916 overview

Caterpillar 916 features overview

Rigid loader linkage

the 916, 926 and 936 have only one lever, one link and 13 pins—a 46% reduction from previous models. All linkage pins feature a polyurethane lip-type seal bonded to a steel casing. Used on both sides on each joint, these seals extend life by keeping lubrication in and grit out. Linkage lube is required only every 100 service meter hours, and every 50 SMH on hinge pins.

Engine / Powertrain / Drivetrain

Caterpillar planetary power shift transmission

Provides 3-speeds forward/3-reverse on the 916, 4-speeds forward/4-reverse on the 926 and 936. These transmissions are geared for excellent rimpull in a wide range of applications. Compared to the loaders they replace, the 916 has an almost 12% weight-to-power advantage... the 926, nearly 10%... and the 936 17% over the 930 and even a slight advantage over the 950. The payoff is faster acceleration, better cycle times.

Other performance features

include rear axle oscillation of 12° on the 916 and 15° on the 926 and 936 for smooth riding, excellent stability and traction. NoSPIN differential option available for use in poor underfoot. Flow-amplified steering on the 926 and 936 and hydrostatic steering on the 916 provide low-effort, automotive-feel control.

Proven drive train design

known for its reliability, the Cat planetary power shift transmission uses oil-cooled clutches to reduce wear-inducing heat. Planetary final drives are specially sized to accept the variety of loads in the various applications the machine is expected to encounter. Outboard design provides quick servicing and repair.

Free-floating rear axle

high-strength, induction-hardened carbon steel rear shafts are free-floating. The axle carries only torque, not machine weight minimizing shock loads and impacts on final drives and differentials.

Hydraulic system

Protection for key components

The hydraulic tank is located behind the cab, and the fuel tank is mounted within rear frame rails where they are less vulnerable to damage, easier to guard in severe applications. For even greater reliability, lift cylinder mountings are protected within the loader tower to reduce chances of damage.

Unmatched serviceability

No more daily maintenance. Easier access to major components, too... and fewer loader linkage lube points. There’s ground-level access to all lube points and fuel filler spout. Brakes and fuel system are adjustment-free. And diagnostic connector and hydraulic pressure taps provide trouble shooting capability for starting/charging electrical system and major hydraulic implement systems.

Efficient hydraulic system

For improved control and operating efficiency, there’s constant implement speed regardless of load, plus reduced lever effort and smoother lever operation. Less horsepower is wasted, too, because the hydraulic pump supplies high-pressure flow only when required.

Adjustment-free brake system

The 4-piston-head caliper disc brakes on the 916 and 926—6-piston-head on the 936—are adjustment-free and can be easily serviced and replaced when necessary.

Easy-to-service hydraulics

Stacked control valves mounted on the right side under the operator’s compartment allow ground level access, easy servicing, and simple installation of a third valve when required. Each valve can be serviced individually.

Other cost-saving features

Include no daily maintenance (just a walk-around visual check). Fuel filler and all lube fittings (except tilt cylinder to frame) are reachable from ground level. Service doors and engine enclosures provide easy access to major components. Maintenance-free batteries and greatly reduced machine lube requirements are also included. Quick-disconnect hydraulic pressure tap fittings allow attachment of diagnostic tools to check pressures for implement control valve, tilt and steering circuits, transmission actuation, and third valve function. Additionally, a diagnostic connector for a starting/charging analyzer permits an accurate check of all starting and charging circuits in just minutes. With trouble-shooting time reduced, downtime is significantly less.

Operator's cab

ROPS sound-suppressed cab

Features a one-piece design with an internal ROPS structure. This holds overall machine height to a minimum for good transportability. The cab is resiliently mounted to reduce noise and vibration. Sealed control linkages reduce them even further and help keep out dust and heat.

Proven Electronic Monitoring System (EMS)

For added protection against downtime. EMS automatically monitors machine functions and visibly and audibly warns the operator of a malfunction before major problems occur.

Sound-suppressed ROPS cab

Standard on the 916, 926 and 936, the sound-suppressed ROPS cab provides exceptional operator comfort, meaning less fatigue and greater efficiency. The window area is increased over former cabs. The door and window open to the rear, allowing open-door operating for added ventilation. Single-lever, twist-grip transmission control makes speed and direction changes easy. The tilt steering column is 5-position adjustable for comfort. The left brake pedal of the dual brake pedal controls permit braking and dumping while maintaining high engine rpm for fast hydraulic response.

Electronic Monitoring System (EMS)

Monitors coolant, transmission oil and hydraulic oil temperatures, engine oil, brake oil, brake air pressures, parking brake on, and alternator output. Three types of warning—light-emitting diodes (LEDs), blinking fault light, and warning horn—alert the operator to problems so he can take quick corrective action or shut down the machine to avoid possible damage or failure.

Bucket and Ground Engaging Tools

Advanced Design

Advanced loader design at an affordable price—that’s VALUE IN ACTION. Each loader is designed with features previously found only on large Cat Loaders. Each offers you fast cycle times, excellent maneuverability, high production, and low operating costs. The Cat 916, 926 and 936 are your most affordable choices in utility loaders.

4-wheel caliper disc brakes

A design proven on other Cat Loaders for excellent braking capacity. Their fast, fade-resistant response helps prevent damage to trucks during loading and in tight maneuvering situations.

Z-bar loader linkage

provides greater breakout force and faster load times, plus increased lift force. There's also optimum rackback angle for maximum material retention. The Z-bar lift arm profile provides excellent forward visibility—especially important in grading applications. A higher dump clearance and increased reach (see Operating Profile) make centerline dumping easier, with less risk of truck damage.

High-strength frame

four-plate loader frame provides high strength and effectively dissipates stress loads. Extra plating at high-load areas forms box sections for increased strength and durability. Box-section rear frame, a durable design proven on larger Cat Loaders, assures drive line alignment and reduces frame twisting.
